Rainpaw shrunk back as the kit darted about and squealed loudly. The squealing was loud... and high pitched... Rainpaw closed his eyes and tried to block out the sound.

Rainpaw shook his head, trying harder to block out the sounds of Acornkit's excited squeals. The sound of the kit's pawsteps made a quiet but sharp scraping sound against the sandy camp floor, each tiny "skrtch" made Rainpaw feel as though his ears were being stabbed. His head was about to split open from pain. Heart racing, he lept off of the meetingrock, landing clumsily, and darted into the nursery which, until today, had been his den.

Nightkit stood at the edge of the brambles watching eagerly as Rainkit bounded with excitement. "In a month" she reminded herself, "she would be an apprentice as well." The thought made her happy. "And then," she thought "I will become the deputy, and then the leader." She smiled and padded over to cheer for Rainkit,"Soon."

Nightkit breathed lightly and then scented something behind her. Acornkit it must have been. She grinned and waited for Acornkit to get close enough for her to spring.
